Abstrak : ABSTRACT 2008. This research investigates the types, the forms and the politeness strategies of requests in online chats. It relies on some theories for analyzing the requests. Three major theories mainly used are the theories of SPEAKING of Dell Hymes and Tsui’s request classification, along with Brown and Levinson theory of politeness strategies. Specifically, this research applies a socio-pragmatics approach as the way of analysis. This research is arranged using a descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research are the transcripts of private-online chats containing request expressions. The transcripts were taken from the subjects of the research. Two Internet users of Self Access Terminal - Sebelas Maret University (SAT–UNS), Surakarta were selected as the subjects of the research. However, the subjects here do not represent all Internet users in SAT-UNS. Four types of request were delivered by the users of Yahoo! Messenger. They are request for action, request for permission, offer and proposal. These requests are classified based on the action and benefit orientation of the speaker and/or the hearer. Each request covers specific purpose and form. Three major forms of expressions are used by the users of Yahoo! Messenger in delivering the requests. The forms refer to texts (written utterances), non-texts, and a combination of both (texts and non-texts). In the online chats, the speaker determines the level of politeness based on the relative imposition on hearer and chooses different strategies for achieving relationship and action goals in making requests. The users of Yahoo! Messenger apply four strategies of politeness in delivering the requests. The four strategies are positive politeness, negative politeness, bald on record, and off record, which show different levels of politeness.
