× ABSTRACT 2008. This thesis presents a discussion about hegemony and marriage in the upper class New York society of the 1870’s as reflected in Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence. The objective if this research is to explain hegemony that rises up and presented in marriage in the upper class of New York family of the 1870’s and also to describe the causes that lead the main characters to decide to get married. This research is an analytical study which applied library research. The source of the main data is Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence published by Everyman’s Library in London in 1993, first published in 1920. The data taken are in the forms of dialogues between the characters, the important events in the novel, the actions of the characters toward the social phenomenon happens in the novel, the setting of the novel and the narrative explanation related to the characters. While the supporting data are taken from other sources such as biography, documentary, criticism and essays about the author, comment, historical information and other pieces of relevant information, which were related to the main data. To achieve the objective of the study, this research employed interdisciplinary approaches which need to apply more than one approaches of study. The approaches applied in this research were biographical approach and socio-historical approach, also supported with hegemonic theories. The theory of hegemony functions to study the hegemonic phenomenon in marriage decision which is occurred to the main characters. Meanwhile, the author’s life and personality is examined by biographical approach, which will support the knowledge on the writing process of the novel and American social condition at the time when novel was written. Finally the socio-historical approach functions to study how far the novel records the American experiences, which is to be the main purpose of this research. Having analyzed The Age of Innocence, it can be concluded that the phenomenon of hegemony had been occurred in the upper class New York society of the 1870’s. The emergence of hegemony in marriage could be seen from the emergence of dominant and subordinated group, the adoption of dominant values by subordinated group, the domination of economy by dominant group and the last was the confrontation between subordinated against dominant group. Hegemony controlled the way that ideas become ‘naturalized’ in process that informs notions of common sense. The dominant group could dictate the subordinated in terms of behaving to its advantage or just to regard their classic values.
