Abstrak : ABSTRACT 2008. This research focused on the analysis of the translation strategies employed in the translation of Ernest Hemingway’s short story entitled A Clean, Well-lighted Place into Tempat yang Bersih dan Terang and the quality of the translation in terms of equivalence/accuracy in: content, style and emotional effect. This research applied a descriptive qualitative method. To collect the data, purposive sampling technique which analyzes the total data was applied. The data taken are all the sentences of the original short story (137 sentences) plus their translation and the result (comments and suggestions from the raters) of questionnaires. In collecting the data, the researcher used both the interactive and non-interactive methods. They were content analysis, questionnaires, and interview. The researcher used a close and open-ended questionnaire distributed to three raters selected based on certain criteria. Interview was an additional technique employed to deal with the completion of the questionnaires. The result of data analysis shows that ten strategies were employed by the translator in translating the short story. They are shifts (unit-shifts, class-shifts, structure-shifts, and intra-system-shifts (65 times of 246 times of the use of all translation strategies –data- or 26.42%), addition (54 data-21.95%), naturalization (30 data-12.19%), literal translation (22 data-8.94%), modulation (21 data-8.54%), paraphrase (20 data-8.13%), deletion (20 data-8.13%), translation using (a) loan word/s or loan word plus explanation (8 data-3.25%), cultural substitution (4 data-1.63%), and translation by (a) more neutral word/s (2 data-0.81%). The analysis on the quality of the translation gives result that the translation is near to having a good quality, shown by the average scores of 2.8., 2.6, and 2.8 for each mentioned category. Detailed classifications for each criterion of each category are as follows: 1). Accurate-in-content translation (average score 2.6-3.0): 117 data (85.40%), not-so-accurate translation (1.6-2.5): 17 data (12.41%) and inaccurate translation (1.0-1.5): 3 data (2.19%); 2). Equivalent-in-style translation: 85 data (62.04%) and not-so-equivalent translation: 52 data (37.96%); 3). Equivalent-in-emotional effect translation: 112 data (81.75%) and not-so-equivalent translation: 25 data (18.25%). This research found that in this literary translation case, style belongs to the least satisfactorily-transferred aspect. It is suggested that the translator give concern to all aspects of literary work in an attempt to provide the readers with an adequate translation.
