An expressive speech act is an expression that can be related on the psychological state of the speaker (Searle, 1976). In saying something, it is also to create certain significant effects upon the thoughts, feelings, or actions of the speaker, addressees, or other people (Austin 1975). Thus, the way the speaker conveys expressive speech acts can be one of the indicators of the speaker’s psychological state. Subsequently, the study aims to investigate the utterances portrayed between the protagonist and antagonist character that contained expressive speech acts in HBO TV Series: Game of Thrones – Season 1. Then, the analysis was pursued to find the supporting evidence in the characterization from the social functions of expressive speech acts verbalized by the protagonist and antagonist character. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design which arranges the inductive analysis into four major stages, namely, domain analysis, taxonomy, componential, and cultural themes with the combination of pragmatics and sociolinguistics approach. The expressive speech act portrayed by the protagonist and antagonist character in HBO TV Series: Game of Thrones - Season 1 can lead to their characterization throughout the movie which is also influenced by the movie staging and context of the situation (power-distance relationship). The characterization of each protagonist and antagonist is different for each stage from orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution as it can be seen from the matrix of componential analysis on the findings.
