The objectives of this research are to classify the types of gender discrimination expressions in a novel Cantik Itu Luka by Eka Kurniawan, to determine the translation techniques in gender discrimination expressions into English, and to assess the quality of translation in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability.
This research belongs to a descriptive qualitative research. The source data are from the document and informant which are selected using purposive sampling technique. The first source data of this research are types of gender discrimination expressions in a novel Cantik Itu Luka by Eka Kurniawan and its translation into an English novel Beauty Is A Wound by Anna Tucker, they are in forms of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. The second is the two informants who validated the gender discrimination expressions data and assessed the translation quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The data are obtained by conducting content analysis and focus group discussion.
The research findings show that there are 136 data classified in four types of gender discrimination expressions found in a novel Cantik Itu Luka by Eka Kurniawan. They are subordination (55.88%), violence (21.32%), stereotyping (19.86%), and workload (2.94%). Moreover, there are 16 techniques found to translate the data into English. The most frequently used technique is an established equivalent (73.68%) and followed by explicitation (7.87%). Furthermore, the result shows that reduction, literal translation, and deletion affect the accuracy, acceptability, and readability. Finally, the average score of translation quality result in 2.92 points with the score of accuracy is 2.89 points, acceptability is 2.95 points, and readability is 2.95 points, which means the translation has a high quality.
It is important for the translators to be aware of gender discrimination which can be realized in the literature works, since it has to comply with the target language’s grammar and target readers’ culture. By knowing this phenomenon, the translators hopefully have a sufficient translation competency to produce a thorough and a high quality of translation in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability.
