×ABSTRACT
2008. This research was conducted to describe and compare the lexicogrammar, cohesion, text structure, and genre in both texts and the interpersonal meaning including status, affect, and contact realized in the texts.
This research uses Systemic Functional Linguistics approach. This research is a qualitative research employing descriptive comparative method. The source of data in this research is Estée Lauder publication text taken from Cosmopolitan magazine published in January 2008 edition and www.esteelauder.com.
The result of the analysis can be seen as follows:
First, in terms of lexicogrammar, there are some similarities and differences found in text 1 and text 2. The similarities are both of them employ dominant indicative declarative proposition, dominant material process, dominant Topical Unmarked and simplex nominal and verbal group and apply positive polarity. On the other hand, the differences are text 1 is mostly dominated by simplex clauses while text 2 is mostly dominated by complex clauses. In terms of thematic structure, text 2 consists of not only Top. Unmarked theme and Top. Marked theme like in text 1, but also textual theme. In terms of Cohesion, each texts has a tight relations realized through the grammatical and lexical cohesion. The similarities are the greatest lexical item occurred in both texts are meronymy, and both texts employ co – meronymy and repetition. Furthermore, in terms of conjunctive relations, both texts dominantly use implicit addition conjunctions. The differences are text 1 employs hyponymy and attitudinal synonym while text 2 employs some grammatical items through references and synonymy. In terms of text structure and genre, text 1 and text 2 employ different genre. Text 1 employs exposition genre while text 2 employs dominantly description genre inserted by explanation genre
Second, the status between the advertiser and the readers in text 1 is unequal, which is proved through the text structure and genre, the presence of attitudinal lexis, and the presence of proposal meaning as the title of the text. However, the status between the advertiser and the readers in text 2 is equal, which is proved through the MOOD system and the use of description genre inserted by explanation genre in the text.
Third, the affect from the advertiser to the product in both texts is positive proved through the MOOD system, the positive polarity applied in the texts, the dominant presence of Topical Unmarked theme and the text structure and genre. Furthermore, the affect from the advertiser to the product in both texts is also positive proved through the MOOD system, the positive polarity, the positive attitudinal epithets in the nominal group, the appearance of abstraction, technicality, and group system, and the use of Cosmopolitan magazine and Internet as the medium.
Fourth, both texts employ familiar and readable language in the texts. It can be seen through the employment of general technical terms in cosmetics, the appearance of some ideational metaphors, the types of clause, and the text structure of both texts.
Based on the conclusions above, it is expected that this research will be an additional reference in understanding Systemic Functional Linguistics, especially in analyzing Interpersonal Meaning in advertisement text published in different media: Cosmopolitan magazine and Internet. The researcher recommends the advertisers to consider the Interpersonal Meaning in creating an advertisement text because language is one of the most important aspects in an advertisement text and it is used to interact with others: to transmit an advertising message and to persuade and influence the readers.
