×ABSTRACT
2008. The research describes real phenomena of children with special needs in America through analyzing a non-fiction, Twilight Children. Twilight Children by Torey Hayden is the latest non-fiction of her that is very popular. Cassandra, the child with the special needs in Twilight Children shows the real condition with the symptoms of behavioral problems. Cassandra is labeled as child with special needs because of her disability to create a good relationship with friends and adult. She tends to be impolite to say erratic speech, harm people, frighten friends, tell untrue story, manipulate story for her purpose, and trust nobody.
The objective of research is to explore Torey Hayden’s education strategy for Cassandra in Twilight Children. It takes the form of library research, which employs the descriptive techniques. By applying sociological approach among the characters especially Hayden as the teacher and therapist and Cassandra as a special kid with special needs, it is appropriate to catch and underline the interaction between them (Leinger, 1979: 147)
Result, the research explores that there are five strategies for Hayden to treat Cassandra better with changing, managing, tolerating, preventing, and accommodating strategy. Changing strategy helps Cassandra to realize the rotation and changing media of learning, there is nothing monotone. By applying changing strategy to treat her, it turns out that Cassandra finally showed progress. From the first meeting until the last togetherness in the clinic, Hayden slowly but sure had made changes in Cassandra’s
point of view about people and her feelings. Cassandra’s trauma and deep down fear about her past kidnapped time by her own father lead her to be someone who is hard to trust on grown up people. In addition, managing strategy aimed to help Cassandra realize external control from the teacher, awareness, and disapproval. Moreover, managing strategy helps Cassandra to follow the rules, realize the kinds of feelings. Cassandra learns to take and give opinion in reasoning conversation then it builds her trust for grown up people. Tolerating, preventing, and accommodating strategy are the strategies to realize Cassandra that people have understanding condition for some reasons. There will be an effect when a cause is done. Moreover, Cassandra has opportunity to think on her way by Hayden guidance.
Then the strategies are supported by Hayden’s love, care, passionate, understanding, and attention to Cassandra. The way Hayden treats Cassandra is not only regular treatment for student and teacher relationship, but it is a close friend. Hayden shows a friendship feeling to Cassandra to trust grown up people and to be honest with her.
