To be polite is really important in interactions because politeness is inherent in the concept of a culture as an idea of polite social behavior or etiquette. Being polite means trying to determine what is appropriate to say to others and what is not (Holmes, 2017). Therefore, politeness refers to a situation where we respect the other person we are talking to. Subsequently, this study aims to investigate the utterance employed by the characters that contained positive politeness strategies in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before movie. Then, the analysis was pursued to find the positive politeness strategy, social context and speech act uttered by the characters at each stages.
This research belongs to descriptive qualitative. In the first step of data collection, the researcher watched the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before movie and found the transcript of the movie. Secondly, the researcher analyzed the stages of the movie and highlight the conversation of characters that contain speech act. Furthermore, the researcher identified the context of each datum and defined the positive politeness strategies using Brown and Levinson theory. Finally, the researcher determined the function of politeness strategy with stages.
Based on the analysis, the researcher find out the types of positive politeness strategy, which consists of 12 strategies of positive politeness. From the results, the researcher has found 71 data containing positive politeness strategies. Then the researcher also found payoff and circumstances as some of the factors that influence positive politeness strategies and the reason for employing those factors. The first is payoff, it is realized because in using positive politeness strategy, the speaker can get several advantages. The speaker can minimize FTA (Face Threatening Acts) which is a conversational turns that risk a 'loss of face' by assuring the hearer that the speaker considers himself to be the same type as he agrees with the hearer and intends to fulfill the hearer’s wants. The second is circumstances that includes social distance (D), and relative power (P), it is because the characters have known each other well and have a close relationship. The positive politeness depicted by the characters in the movie can influenced by the movie staging and the context of the situation. The characters are different for each stage from orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution as it can be seen from the matrix of componential analysis on the findings.
