This study is focused on the politeness strategies used by the protagonist and antagonist characters in the TV series “Emily in Paris”. This study aims to find out the types of politeness strategies employed by the protagonist and antagonist characters in the TV series “Emily in Paris”, to know how the politeness strategies are employed by the protagonist and antagonist characters, and to discover the factors that influence the choice of politeness strategies. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative and total sampling techniques to analyze the data. The data are the utterances of the protagonist and antagonist characters that include politeness strategies. The researcher uses the theory proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) in analyzing the data. The result of this study shows that there are four types of politeness strategies used by the protagonist and antagonist characters in the TV series “Emily in Paris”, they are bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and bald off-record. Politeness strategies are employed by the protagonist and antagonist characters in three forms: Imperative, Declarative, and Interrogative. In Bald on-record, all the data use imperative form. In positive politeness, the declarative form (76%) and interrogative form (24%). In negative politeness, 100% of the data use the declarative form. In bald off-record, 100% of the data use declarative form. There are several factors that become the reason why the protagonist and antagonist characters choose certain politeness strategies, which are the power and distance between the speaker and the hearer. The researcher hopes this study could contribute to the following research. The researcher suggests to combine with other theories for future research.
