English Education Department, Graduate School, Universitas Sebelas Maret, Surakarta.
Indonesia is dominated by generation z today. Generation z is popular for being the digital natives since they are grown up along with the vast development of technology. It means that they should be the generation who are technologically literate. However, the survey indicator from Microsoft (2018) put Indonesian internet users, who are mostly generation z, as the rudest internet users in Southeast Asia. It indicates that digital literacy is still now fully understood. Interestingly, this dominant generation z in Indonesia includes young teachers who have taught at schools. This research aimed to explore the digital literacy of generation z teachers and how they integrated digital literacy into class instruction for English lessons. In addition, some challenges hindering the integration of digital literacy were also revealed.
This is qualitative research using a case study research design to obtain an in-depth investigation. Four methods of data collecting were used in this study: questionnaires, interviews, observations, and documentation. Based on their experience with digital technology, the informants were specifically picked, and data were then gathered from them. The result reveals three findings regarding 1) the digital literacy of generation z teachers, 2) the integration of digital literacy into English instruction, and 3) the factors that obstruct the integration of digital literacy. In this sense, the low level of digital literacy brought about the low integration stage of digital literacy into English instruction. On the other hand, the higher level of digital literacy led to the successful integration of digital literacy. Besides, some internal and external factors also contribute to the unsuccessful integration of digital literacy. Recommendations are suggested to advance schools’ equipment and training to mediate better support for teachers in creating a digitally literate classroom.
