This research was conducted on the grounds that women in the media are still underrepresented and marginalized. In fact, how women are represented in the media can be a reflection of how women are in real life. Furthermore, the value of patriarchy, the notion that men are superior to women, appears to be maintained by many people. It is possible that patriarchal values are completely apparent in media coverage of women, leading readers to hold the same views. This might lead to women being marginalized and discriminated against in society.

The following issues are addressed in this study: (i) How are women linguistically represented in rape news published in women and general news sites? and (ii) Do producers influence the representation of women in the media?

The purpose of this study is to: (i) analyze how women are represented linguistically in rape news published on two distinct news sites. (ii) To discover whether or not the producers influence the representation of women in the media.

The data for this study are words, phrases, clauses, and sentences from two news stories regarding rape and harassment published in The Cut, entitled A Fourth Woman Sues Marilyn Manson for Sexual Assault, and the BBC, entitled Marilyn Manson faces fourth sexual assault case.

This study belongs to descriptive qualitative research. The data in this study is analyzed using Sara Mills' theory, Feminist Stylistics. To answer research questions, three levels of analysis are conducted, they are analysis at level of word, analysis at the level of phrase/sentence, and analysis at the level of discourse.

The results of this study show that (i) women are still underrepresented in rape news because they are positioned as receivers with male being the doers. Women are depicted as weak, easily oppressed, and subordinate to men. (ii) the portrayal of women in the two news stories is not significantly different. The alignment of the two news sites is what distinguishes them. The women's news website is strongly pro-woman, depicting men as evil people and reporting mainly from a female perspective. Meanwhile, the general news website appears to be more neutral by implicitly describing the men’s behavior and reporting from both sides.
