Charactonyms are names of fictional characters that potrays certain traits of the character.The purpose of this research is to identify techniques used by the translator to translate charactonyms found in the novel The Silmarillion and analyze the quality of the translations in terms of accuracy and acceptability.

This reaseach is a descriptive qualitative reseach. The sources of data in this reseach are documents and informants. The reseacher uses purposive sampling technique to collect the data. The documents are charactonyms found in the novel The Silmarillion and their translations. Meanwhile, the informants are raters that validate the data and assess the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. The data are obtained through content analysis and focus group discussion.

The research finding shows there are 196 charactonyms found in the book The Silmarillion. Using Fernandes’ (2006) theory of translating names, researcher identifies six techniques—rendition, copy, addition, transcription, transposition, and deletion—are used, either alone or combined with other techniques. Rendition, copy and deletion are the most frequently used technique both while alone and combined with other techniques. The translation techniques affect the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. Techniques that contribute positively to accuracy are rendition and copy. Techniques that contribute positively to acceptability are rendition and addition. The score of accuracy is 2.98 and the score of acceptability is 2.45. The translation of charactonyms in The Silmarillion is accurate and acceptable, with the average score of the translation quality is 2.77.
