Supervisor: Prof. Drs.Mangatur Nababan, M.Ed., M.A., Ph.D.This research aimed to classify the category of taboo expressions uttered in “PulpFiction” movie, to identify the translation techniques used by the translator intranslating the taboo expressions into Indonesia, to analyze the impact of translationtechniques used on the shifting of taboo expressions, and to assess the translationquality in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. This research applied thedescriptive qualitative method. The sources of data were documents and informants,which were taken selectively. The documents were taboo utterances in the “PulpFiction” movie and their translations. Meanwhile, the informants were the raterswho helped in analyzing the data and assessing the translation quality in termsof accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The methods of data collection werecontent analysis and focus group discussions.The research findings show that the researcher found 196 taboo utterances in the“Pulp Fiction” movie. The researcher found 8 categories of taboo expression.There are 118 data of obscenity category, which consist of referent, sharpener,intensifier, verb, and interjection function, 23 data of scatology category consistingreferent, interjection, sharpener, and adjective. Vulgarity with 16 data functioningas referent, slurs with 15 data functioning as referent, insults functioning as referentand adjective with 8 data, epithet with 6 data functioning as referent, sharpener, andinterjection. The researcher also found a cursing category with 6 data functioningas adjective and interjection. And lastly, profanity category with 4 data functioningas interjection. Moreover, this research identifies 4 translation techniques used bythe translator to translate the taboo expressions. Two translation techniques causethe shifting of taboo expressions. They are deletion and generalization. There aretwo types of shifting; shifting from taboo into non-taboo, and shifting from taboointo zero expression. The average score of the translation quality is 1.94. It indicatesthat the translation of taboo expressions in “Pulp Fiction” Indonesian subtitles haslow accuracy, acceptability, and readability.
