This research centralizes on the representation of women in the news of ex Princess of Japan, Mako Komuro and her marriage with a commoner in online news coverage by applying feminist stylistics approach. Two different news texts from Daily Mail (UK) and Kyodo News (Japan). This research aims (1) to discover the choice of words, phrases, sentences to describe women in terms of status and marriage and (2) to investigate how the sexism and negative connotations are constructed linguistically.

The method used in this research is descriptive-qualitative research method with implementing the approach of feminist stylistics by Sara Mills. Three levels analysis comprises analysis at the level of word, analysis at the level of sentences/phrase, and analysis at the level of discourse. The data taken is from Daily Mail, United Kingdom-based news platform and Kyodo News, Japan-based news platform. The consideration of taking the two sources of news is (1) two articles covering women based on status and marriage on online news sites and (2) international news sites with different cultural backgrounds.

The findings unveil as follows: (1) the representation of women is unchanging in which they are referred to the family status, stigmatization and women as the subject in sensitive topics and gender stereotyped news such as marriage (2) the sensationalism found in the news reflected the writers’ ideology to construct the negative view to the readers toward women regarding the status and marriage.
