MOTIVATION IN LEARNING ENGLISH: A CLASSROOM ACTION

This research aims to investigate: (1) to describe the current conditions of
students' motivation in learning English in the preliminary research. (2) to identify
whether or not Augmented Reality media can motivate students to learn English
from online classes. The research used a classroom action research method, and the
subjects were 35 students in the eleventh grade in a public senior high school in
Sukoharjo. This research data were collected through implementing the action,
observation, interview, and questionnaire. The data were analyzed using qualitative
data proposed by Mile and Huberman. This research showed that in the preresearch,

all students had low motivation to learn English through online classes.
Moreover, the questionnaire, observation sheet, and interview results revealed the
findings after the researcher implemented augmented reality. The mean score of the
observation sheet from the pre-research was 2.16, and it increased in the last
meeting was 3.25. The mean score of the questionnaire sheets also increased. The
mean of the pre-research score was 122.1, which increased to 144.2. This research
concluded that using Augmented Reality could improve students' motivation to
learn English. The students' attitudes and behaviors indicate that they are highly
motivated.
