The objectives of this research are to classify the types of pragmatic functions found in the movie “500 Days of Summer”, identify the techniques used by the translator in translating the dialogues into Indonesian, analyze the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability and analyze the pragmatic function shifts that may occurs.
This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The sources of data which consist of documents and informants are selected using purposive sampling technique. The first data are WH questions found in the dialogue of the movie “500 Days of Summer”, The pragmatic functions of the dialogues found in the movie “500 Days of Summer”, while the informants are two raters who validated the data, identified the translation techniques used by the translator and assessed the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. The data are obtained by conducting content analysis and focus group discussion.
The research findings show that a total of 90 data are classified into 8 types of pragmatic functions, they are seeking information (65 data/72.2%), seeking clarification (10 data/11.1%), expressing disapproval, or disagreement (3 data/5.4%), seeking advice (2 data/2.2%), advising (2 data/2.2%), maintaining/initiating conversation (2 data/2.2%), expressing irritation, or exasperation (2 data/2.2%), and lastly is seeking confirmation (1 data, 1.1%). Moreover, this research identifies 11 translation techniques used by the translator to translate the WH questions in the movie entitled “500 Days of Summer” into Indonesian.
The most frequently used translation technique found in this research is Established equivalence, followed by implicitation. The result also shows that established equivalence technique gives the biggest positive impact to the accuracy and acceptability of the translation. The score of the accuracy is 2.97 and the score of the acceptability is 2.98. Finally, the total score of the translation quality is 2.97, indicating the high level of score in accuracy and acceptability translation.
