This research focuses on analyzing the types, functions, and the impact of the movie context on the characterization. The purposes of this research are 1) to identify the types of taboo words that exist in the “Dictator Movie”; 2) to identify the functions of taboo used in the movie, and 3) to explain how the taboo words support the characterization of the movie.
This research applied descriptive qualitative research. In this research, the source of data is a document in a form of a movie transcript and staging of the movie. The data are conversational expressions in the form of phrases and sentences. There are 105 data of taboo words in the forms of phrases and sentences found in the data source. The writer uses total sampling to compile the criteria based on the setting, participant, and event using related theory.
There are 105 data found in the Dictator Movie. There are nine types of taboo words proposed by Jay applied in this movie, which are: 1) Epithet, 2) profanity, 3) vulgarity, 4) blasphemy, 5) obscenity, 6) cursing, 7) slang, 8) insult/slur, and 9) scatology. Meanwhile, there are seven functions proposed by Liedlich and Wardhaugh. Those functions are: 1) to draw attention to oneself, 2) to
show contempt (impression in which a person or something useless), 3) to be provocative, 4) to mock authority, 5) endearment (to show intimacy), 6) to provide catharsis (to release their intense frustration), and 7) to create strong interpersonal identity.
The taboo words used in this movie in each staging result are as follow: in orientation, there are 7 types of taboo words, which are Slur, Vulgarity, Cursing, Obscenity, Blasphemy, Profanity, and Epithet. In complication, there are 8 types of taboo words that exist, which are Slur, Vulgarity, Cursing, Obscenity, Profanity, Slang, Epithet, and Scatology. Meanwhile in the resolution stage; in terms of types of taboo, there are only 4 types of taboo which are Slur, Vulgarity, Profanity, and Slang.
This research concludes that the Dictator experiences the character
development, in which he has a remarkably intense “change of identity” that especially in personality trait or the psychological trait of the character. This means that the character is employed as the dynamic character or someone who undergoes an important change. It can be seen from the use of taboo that fluctuates from the orientation to resolution, which affects the flow of the story.
