This research aims to classify the types of metaphors; identify the translation techniques applied by the translator; identify the type shifting of metaphors; and assess the translation quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability of metaphors in Lord of the Flies novel.

This research was conducted using a descriptive-qualitative method. The research utilized two sources of data, they are documents and informants. The documents are the metaphorical expressions that appear in Lord of the Flies, while the informants are the raters who verified and assessed the data. Document analysis and focus group discussion were applied in this research in order to collect the data.

The findings show that the total data obtained in this research are 96 data consisting of four types of metaphor: anthropomorphic metaphor, animal metaphor, from concrete to abstract metaphor or vice versa, and synaesthetic metaphor. There are nine techniques used in translating metaphors; established equivalent (40%), explicitation (37%), adaptation (7%), addition + established equivalent (6%), transposition (3%), paraphrase (3%), deletion (2%), discursive creation (1%), and modulation (1%). This research also discovered that 49% of data type-shifted. 5 out of 9 techniques applied by the translator affect the shifting. In addition, the average score of each translation quality indicates that the translator produces less accurate, yet acceptable and readable translations. Therefore, the cumulative score of translation quality is 2.71 proving that the translator is not yet successful enough in translating metaphorical expressions to the target language.
