This final report explains the activities I carried out during my internship at Anak Hebat Indonesia (AHI), a publishing and printing company founded in 2016 and based in Yogyakarta. AHI publishes and distributes thousands of books in various genres fiction, non-fiction, educational, and religious, and markets them across Indonesia. Because AHI frequently handles translation and editing projects, I chose it as my internship placement. I completed the eight-week internship from January 20, 2025, to March 15, 2025. My main task was translating the classic novel The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle from English into Indonesian. The novel contains twelve short stories and uses classical English that reflects the cultural and literary atmosphere of the early twentieth century. I applied Nida and Taber’s translation process which consists of analysis, transfer, and restructuring throughout the project. During the analysis stage, I focused on identifying idiomatic and connotative expressions that could not be interpreted literally. The novel contains many idiomatic expressions such as “By Jove,” “on the prowl,” and “prick up your ears.” These expressions convey cultural, emotional, and figurative meanings that create challenges in the translation process. My main difficulties involved interpreting the implicit meanings of classical expressions and finding suitable Indonesian equivalents. To address these issues, I conducted contextual analysis supported by dictionaries, translation platforms, and cultural references. In the transfer stage, I used several translation techniques, including adaptation, equivalence, modulation, literal translation, and borrowing, depending on the characteristics of each expression. During restructuring, I refined the translated text to ensure its naturalness, readability, and acceptability for Indonesian readers while maintaining the original meaning and stylistic nuances. Besides translation, I also contributed to complete other tasks such as language assessment tests, weekly mentoring sessions, and editing the translated manuscripts of fellow interns. This internship significantly improved my translation competence, deepened my understanding of idiomatic and connotative meanings in classic literary works, and provided practical experience in handling real translation projects in the publishing industry. Overall, the program offered valuable preparation for entering the professional world of translation and publishing.
