INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE IN LANGUAGE CLASSROOM: A CASE STUDY ON THE INDONESIAN EFL PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ PERCEPTIONS AND TOWARDS THEIR PRACTICES DURING TEACHING PRACTICUM PROGRAM. Thesis of English Education Department at Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Sebelas Maret University, 2025.This study investigates Indonesian EFL pre-service teachers’ perceptions of Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) and how they apply it during their teaching practicum. As global interaction grows, ICC has become essential in English Language Teaching (ELT). The study aims to (1) explore how pre-service teachers perceive ICC and (2) examine how their beliefs are reflected in classroom practice. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis involving two pre-service teachers in Surakarta, Central Java. The data analyzed based on Byram’s (1997) five ICC components as guided. Findings show that 1) participants generally view ICC as the ability to communicate effectively across cultures, aligning with four of Byram’s (1997) five ICC components—attitudes, knowledge, interpreting and relating, and discovery and interaction. However, critical cultural awareness was not evident in their understanding. 2) In classroom practice, teachers promoted ICC through cultural texts, brainstorming, and comparative discussions. While their efforts reflect positive attitudes, a lack of critical reflection points to the need for deeper ICC training in teacher education. This study emphasizes the importance of fully integrating ICC into pre-service teacher preparation. The findings underscore the importance of integrating ICC more thoroughly in teacher education curricula, particularly through the inclusion of critical cultural awareness. Pre-service teachers need structured support, reflective training, and consistent exposure to intercultural principles not only in isolated courses but throughout their pedagogical development.
