ABSTRACT
The objectives of this research are (1) to identify whether or not and to what extent YouTube video improved students’ speaking proficiency, and (2) to analyze the situation when YouTube video is implemented in the speaking class. The problem highlighted in this research is the low speaking proficiency of the seventh grade of SMP N 15 Surakarta in 2012/2013 academic year.
The procedure of the research consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection. In collecting data, the writer use as follows: researcher diary, interview with the English teacher, interview with the students, and students’ speaking tests. The researcher used photograph, field note, and lesson plan as his documents. The test consists of pre-test, post test 1 and post test 2. The research is applied in two cycles. First cycle consists of three meetings and the second cycle consist two meetings.
The results of the research show that that the use of YouTube video can improve students’ speaking skill and class climate: 1. YouTube video can improve the students’ speaking skill. It can be seen from the result of observation, post test 1 and post test 2. At the pre-test shows that the mean of pronunciation is 2.83; it was improved to 3.86 in post test 1 and 3.89 in post test 2. The students’ mean of vocabulary is 2.5; it was improved to 3.6 in post test 1 and 4.33 in post test 2. The students’ mean of grammar is 2.5; it was improved to 3.58 in post tense 1 and 4.22 in post test 2. The students’ mean of fluency is 2.83; it was improved to 3.41 in post tense 1 and 3.50 in post test 2. 2. The research findings show the improvement in the speaking class as follows: a) the class situation more life and fun; b) there were interaction between student–student and teacher–student; c) the students more active and enjoy the lesson; d) students’ self–esteem increase, they not shy again when perform forward in the class; e) students’ speaking proficiency improved.
The researcher hopes that English teacher can use this media to teach in speaking class. And this thesis can be a reference for the other English teacher to know the way of using YouTube video.
