This qualitative-descriptive research is intended to reveal one of the American myths that is myth of nuclear family. The thesis is meant to describe how the American myth of nuclear family in patriarchal society is reflected in movie The Stepford Wives 2004 directed by Frank Oz. The source of data used is VCD of the movie The Stepford Wives 2004 by Frank Oz produced by Paramount Pictures and Dream Works in 2004 and is distributed in Indonesia by MediaLine Entertainment. Articles related to the movie and to the related issue are also used to support the analysis. The researcher uses some approaches and theories in answering the problem statement. Socio-psychological theory is applied to reveal the characters of Joanna Eberhart and Claire Wellington to find out their different points of view toward the position of women in a marriage. Cultural approach is also used in this thesis since the movie is the product of culture. Historical approach is applied in this thesis since the movie brings the fifties values which are plainly reflected in the costumes. The researcher finds it significant to understand about the fifties values in order to understand the image of the ideal wives during the decade where American wives were considered the most ideal wives ever. Feminist approach is involved to describe the inequality between husbands and wives in the myth of nuclear family and the conflict occurs dealing with the women’s movement to get the equality. Since myth that is reflected in a popular culture product becomes the main discussion in this thesis, the researcher applies the popular culture theory to help the researcher in analyzing the problem statement. In translating the images from the movie into words so the message contained can be revealed, the researcher applies semiotic theory by Roland Barthes and combines it with film theory such as framing, angle, lighting, etc. From the analysis, the researcher finds out that the movie The Stepford Wives 2004 directed by Frank Oz reflects the American myth of nuclear family through four elements. First element is the title that reflects the myth of nuclear family through the font and the picture. The opening reflects the myth through the beliefs and values contained in some pictures. The costume as the third element reflects the myth through the fifties values that it brings to the modern setting of time. The last element is the character, which in this thesis the researcher focuses on the characters of Joanna Eberhart and Claire Wellington.
