The purposes of this research are (1) to find the types of swear words are
used in Good Girls TV Series Season 1, (2) to find the functions of swear words
are used in Good Girls TV Series Season 1, (3) to identify the techniques are used
in translating swear words in Good Girls TV Series Season 1, (4) to discover the
shift in types and functions from the use of translation techniques for swear words
in Good Girls TV Series Season 1, (5) to find out the quality in terms of accuracy
and acceptability of the swear words translation.
The result of this research found that from 100 data found, there are four
types of swear words found in the series, namely insulting names, demeaning
labels, and unflattering comparisons (63), religious reinforcers (29), reprehensible
behaviors and violations of moral codes (6), and family origins (2). It can be seen
that insulting names, demeaning labels, and unflattering comparisons is the type
that appears most frequently. This research also found that there are three
functions of swear words in this series, those functions are abusive (52), expletive
(27), and auxiliary (21). The most dominant is the abusive function. The
researcher also found that there are three translation techniques used in this swear
words translation in the Good Girls series, those techniques are deletion (47),
established equivalent (43), and explicitation (10). The translation technique that
is most widely used in the translation of swear words in this series is deletion. For
the translation shift, there are shift in types and shift in functions. For the types,
there are 74 total shifts with eight different types of shift types. Insulting names,
demeaning labels, and unflattering comparisons to non-swearing using deletion
(30), religious reinforcers to non-swearing using deletion (17), insulting names,
demeaning labels, and unflattering comparisons to non-swearing using
explicitation (10), insulting names, demeaning labels, and unflattering
comparisons to reprehensible behaviors and violations of moral codes using
established equivalent (6), insulting names, demeaning labels, and unflattering
comparisons to religious reinforcers using established equivalent (6), family
origins to religious reinforcers using established equivalent (2), religious
reinforcers to insulting names, demeaning labels, and unflattering comparisons
using established equivalent (2), reprehensible behaviors and violations of moral
codes to religious reinforcers using established equivalent (1). For the shift in
functions, there are 57 total shifts with six different types of shift functions. There
are auxiliary to non-swearing using deletion (20), abusive to non-swearing using
deletion (19), expletive to non-swearing using deletion (8), abusive to nonswearing using explicitation (5), expletive to non-swearing using explicitation (4),
auxiliary to abusive using established equivalent (1). For the translation quality, in
terms of accuracy, there are (43) data included in the accurate category, (10) data
included in the less accurate category, and (47) data included in the inaccurate
category. Meanwhile, in terms of acceptability, (52) data are considered
acceptable, (1) data is less acceptable, and (47) data are considered unacceptable.
