This study examines the politeness strategies used by the protagonist and antagonists in the movie Emma, analyzing how the use of these strategies transforms throughout the narrative stages (orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution). Using a qualitative descriptive approach within the framework of politeness theory, this study aims to identify the types of politeness strategies employed by the main character and antagonists, as well as to describe how narrative development influences the application of these strategies. The results show that positive politeness strategies are dominant at the orientation stage, serving to establish character relationships. The complication stage features a significant increase in the use of both positive politeness and bald on record strategies, reflecting the rising intensity of conflict. By contrast, the evaluation and resolution stages show a decline in politeness strategies as characters shift toward more direct and emotionally resolved interactions. Overall, the study demonstrates the dynamic and adaptive use of politeness strategies in alignment with communicative goals and evolving relational dynamics within the narrative.
