This thesis focuses on the nominalization comparison of editorial and commentary texts taken from The Jakarta Post online version. The texts taken from The Jakarta Post sites in different three topics: Brokering Rohingya, Ahok Case, and Tobacco Bill. All of these written in the year 2017.

The aims of the research are to find the nominalization types applied in the texts and to know the similarities and differences between editorial and commentary texts related to the nominalization. In addition, the research aim to find the pattern of nominalization in the editorial and commentary texts in The Jakarta Post online version.

This thesis employs a descriptive qualitative method. The research location of this thesis was texts which taken from The Jakarta Post site. The data were collected from six texts (thee editorials and three commentary texts) in three different topics.

The result of data analysis shows that: 1) Verbal nominalization dominates the types of nominalization both in editorial and commentary texts. 2) The lexical density of editorial text is higher than commentary texts. 3) The pattern of nominalization in editorial is dominated by verbal nominalization. 4) The pattern of nominalization in commentary is also dominated by verbal nominalization. 5) The similarity is both genre texts use nominalization in four difference types proposed by Halliday. The difference is both genre texts use nominalization in different number of nominalizations, the number of nominalizations in editorial is higher than in commentary texts.

The conclusion is the most type of nominalization used in the editorial and commentary texts is Verbal Nominalization, followed by the Head of Nominal Group Nominalization, then Act Nominalization, last Adjectival Nominalization. Moreover, the use of nominalization in editorial is more than in commentary texts. It is showed by the lexical density in editorial texts is higher than in commentary texts.
