As people live in a community, people use language to communicate with others. Politeness is used to make the situation between the speaker and the hearer more comfortable. Politeness is a system of interpersonal relations designed to facilitate human interaction by minimizing the potential conflict and confrontation inherent in all human interaction. The purpose of this study is to look into the utterances made by the characters in the Netflix series Never Have I Ever Season 1 that used positive politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson, as well as the influence of social contexts and movie staging on the use of positive politeness strategies. This study used a descriptive qualitative method with a pragmatic approach and an analysis stage that included domain, taxonomy, componential, and cultural theme analysis.

The results show that the use of types and strategies of positive politeness by the characters in the Netflix series entitled Never Have I Ever Season 1 are influenced by the context of situation (power and social distance) and also the movie stages (orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution). Strategy 7 namely presuppose/rise/assert common ground becomes the most used strategy by the characters. Positive politeness strategies mostly appear during the complication stage, where conflicts arise between characters. Therefore, positive politeness strategies are used by the characters in the series to reduce FTA (Face Threatening Act) and to save the hearer's positive face.
