This research aims to (i) identify the types of assertive speech acts uttered by Hardin Scott and Tessa Young in “After”; (ii) analyze the translation techniques applied in rendering these utterances into Indonesian; (iii) examine the impact of these techniques on the presence or absence of shift; and (iv) assess the translation quality of the assertive speech acts. The data were obtained from the “After” movie and its Indonesian subtitles, supported by raters”evaluations. Data collection was carried out through content analysis and Focus Group Discussion, resulting in 80 assertive speech acts analyzed using Spradley’s model. The analysis identified 15 types of assertive speech acts based on Alston (2002), which are affirm, tell, appraise, deny, object, admit, answer, respond, claim, insist, describe, explain, disclose, acknowledge, and complain. The analysis further shows that the translation techniques applied by the translator were effective in maintaining both the category and subcategory of assertive speech acts. Assertive types such as “affirm” and “appraise” remained consistent across both languages, with no pragmatic or structural shifts identified based on van Leuven-Zwart’s framework. Techniques of established equivalent, literal translation, and explicitation played a crucial role in preserving meaning and function. The findings show that 92.5% of the translations are accurate, while 6.25% are less accurate, and 1.25% inaccurate. The cases of lower accuracy were mainly caused by reduction and less precise word choices, which affected the accuracy of assertive speech acts. In terms of acceptability, 95% are acceptable and 5% less acceptable, often caused by unnatural expressions, which affect the naturalness and readability. Overall, the study demonstrates how translation techniques affect the accuracy and acceptability of assertive speech acts in movie subtitles, with some exhibiting quality issues due to inappropriate or inconsistent application of techniques, such as reduction, literal translation, and discursive creation.
