Universitas Sebelas Maret, Surakarta. 2024 This research aims to classify the types and functions of taboo words found in The Suicide Squad movie, to identify the techniques used in translating taboo words, to analyze the impact of techniques used on the shifting of types and functions, and to assess the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. Descriptive qualitative method was applied in this research. The data were taken from the movie subtitle in form of taboo words and phrases along with their translation. The data were collected with content analysis and focus group discussion. The findings show 113 data of taboo words in the movie. There are five types of taboo words including sexual references (65), profane or blasphemous (31), scatological referents and disgusting objects (10), psychological-physical-social deviations (4) and ancestral allusions (3). There are four functions of taboo words comprising expletive (64), auxiliary (29), abusive (12) and humorous (8). The translator used five translation techniques covering reduction (42), explicitation (38), established equivalent (28), generalization (4) and borrowing (1). In total of 113 data, 106 are shifted in type (93.80%) and 85 data are shifted in function (75.22%). The average score of accuracy is 1.87 and acceptability is 1.85, resulting an overall score of 1.86 in translation quality, which is considered low.
