The translation of neologisms in literary texts presents a significant challenge because such expressions are often creative, context-bound, and culturally embedded. In fantasy literature, neologisms function not only as lexical innovations but also as tools of world-building and narrative characterization. Translating them requires careful decision-making to maintain meaning, stylistic nuance, and readability in the target language. This challenge becomes more complex in children’s fantasy texts such as Roverandom, where imaginative language plays a central role in shaping the reader’s immersion in the fictional world. This study aims to (1) identify and classify the types of neologisms found in Roverandom, (2) analyze the translation techniques used to render those neologisms into Indonesian, (3) examine the shifts occurring in the translation process, and (4) assess the translation quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. This research employs a descriptive qualitative, product-oriented design. The data consist of 78 neologisms identified in the English text and their Indonesian translations. The analysis is based on Newmark’s (1988) neologism typology, combined with translation techniques proposed by Newmark (1988) and Molina & Albir (2002), and evaluated using Nababan et al.’s (2012) Translation Quality Assessment model. The findings show that collocations are the most dominant type of neologism, followed by derived words and pseudo-neologisms. This indicates that Tolkien primarily constructs creativity through word combinations and morphological play rather than entirely new coinages. In terms of translation techniques, through-translation and transference are the most frequently applied strategies. These choices suggest that the translator tends to preserve the imaginative structure of the source text while maintaining grammatical conformity in Indonesian. The overall translation quality score is 2,8 out of 3, which indicates generally good quality. Among the three aspects, acceptability receives the highest average score (2,90), showing that most translated neologisms sound natural and appropriate in Indonesian. Accuracy and readability also obtain relatively high scores, although several items show partial meaning reduction or require additional effort to understand.Regarding readability, it is important to note that although Roverandom is categorized as children’s literature, the readability assessment in this study was conducted by adult raters. This decision was made because neologisms involve complex morphological and semantic elements that require sufficient linguistic competence to evaluate accurately. If adult readers encounter difficulty in understanding certain neologisms, it is likely that children would experience greater difficulty. However, a high readability score from adult raters does not automatically guarantee easy comprehension for child readers, as children’s understanding is influenced by vocabulary range and cognitive development. Therefore, this study highlights that translating literary neologisms involves continuous negotiation between preserving creativity and ensuring accessibility, especially in the context of children’s fantasy literature.
